Although most weddings follow a familiar pattern, a wedding can tell a couple’s unique story.

You may want your wedding to give people an insight into the life you have shared so far and be a reflection of what has brought you to the point of tying the knot.

The question is, how do you share your love story in one day? It usually starts with selecting the right theme.

How to Choose a Theme

There are some questions that, when answered, will help couples develop a theme. These questions include:

· How and where did you meet?

· What do you love to do together?

· When did you first realize that you had found the one and what were you doing in that moment?

· Where and when did you get engaged?

After answering these questions, you may realize that a pattern arises or that there is a prominent feature that emerges. That pattern or prominent feature sums up who you are as a couple, and is the key to your perfect theme.

Let me give you an example of how to use those questions to develop a theme.

Let’s say in answer to those questions that you both met at Café Blue in Irish Town, Jamaica one Sunday morning. Your eyes met while both of you sipped on Blue Mountain lattes with a touch of Appleton rum.

Soon, spiked coffees become a part of your ritual, as you spend Sunday mornings catching up on the week that was at one coffee shop or the next. Soon you are travelling together and sharing coffee and conversations at cafes from Columbia to France.

One ordinary Sunday morning while trying to decide whether to spend a lazy day in bed or have your usual café date, you look at each other and realize that there’s no one you’d rather spend a mundane lazy Sunday with. This is love!

Your 5 year anniversary as a couple is coming up and you plan a trip to Italy. It’s a bright Sunday morning in July. You are at Caffe Florian trying to decide what to eat. You put your menu down to say you’re thinking of getting a cappuccino or macchiato (you’re in Italy after all) and there he is on one knee, proposing!

A perfect theme for this hypothetical couple is SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE (and perhaps some travel too)!

How do you turn that theme into a wedding?

Well as a venue, you would probably select a coffee estate, like Craighton Estate in Irish Town.

Instead of having the usual afternoon wedding and dinner reception, you may do an early Sunday morning wedding in July with a brunch to follow.

At “cocktail hour” you could do set up a replica of a café and give guests some brunch/breakfast finger foods with coffees from around the world or the places you have visited as a couple.

You may use rich earth tones and rustic touches of warm woods and coffee barrels for your décor.

Following the trend of wedding hashtags, you could encourage your friends to use #loveisbrewing and have your wedding programme and website also use the catch phrase.

You can have names for guest tables in keeping with the theme, like, “Love Strong like Blue Mountain Coffee”, “Coffee Lovers” or “It’s Never too Latte for Love” (corny, but you get the idea).

You can also give bags of coffee as your wedding favours.

These are just a few ways to incorporate a coffee (with a bit of travel) theme.

Not a coffee lover? Maybe you love rum. Maybe you love jerk chicken. Maybe reggae is your life’s passion. Maybe you couldn’t imagine your life without your regular hikes.

While coffee may not be your thing, with just a bit of creativity, any simple passion that a couple shares can be turned into a theme.
